Overview about the Agricultural landsacpe in Srilanka

Introduction

Over the last thirty years, there has been a significant shift in agricultural
markets and agricultural commodity trading around the world. The globe is
expanding and shifting from a national market to an international trade
system, which means that small-scale farmers compete with large-scale
industrial farmers from other countries in a single marketplace.
There is pressure on local farmers in certain countries such as Sri Lanka
to commercialize their businesses. This includes the increased living cost
and necessities of farming families, growth of urban areas and population,
and decline in the size of land. In order for a local farmer to overcome
these modern challenges, they will require more innovative systems for
production and processing. Hence, agricultural entrepreneurship or
agripreneurship is now of vital importance

Agripreneur

Agripreneur: An agripreneur is an entrepreneur whose main business is agriculture or agriculture related. The term simply derives from this,
Agriculture + Entrepreneur = Agripreneur.

Agripreneurship

Agripreneurship is a sector that includes both
agricultural and farming-related commercial operations. Agripreneurship is
a type of business that encompasses all of the stages involved in getting
an agricultural product to market, from manufacturing to processing to
distribution. All elements of generating an agricultural product must be
examined and improved by an agripreneur. Agricultural goods might range
from animal products to harvesting fruits and vegetables.

How is agripreneurship different to traditional farming?

A typical farmer is only concerned with cultivating land, reaping the
harvest and selling it to markets. He/she can be described as being
susceptible to any and all external market forces and often ends up being
a victim to sudden changes.

Process

An agripreneur not only cultivates the land, reaps the harvest and sells it
to markets but he/she finds opportunities to make the most of any
agricultural input. An agripreneur considers the market dynamics before
cultivation and often considers three main aspects before/during
cultivation:

Some even go the extra mile to engage in value addition processes such as processing and packaging. Overall agripreneurship differs from traditional farming in the sense that it diverts from the subsistence level farming approach to a much more innovative process in which agripreneurs search for ways to make venues commercially viable and profitable in the long term where they have to continually explore methods to add value and growth into their business.
